Debunking the Top 3 Home Organizing Myths for Effective Decluttering

Declutter without fear: keep what you love, use what you need, and let go of the rest with confidence.

 

As someone who absolutely loves helping people get organized, I often run into a few objections when chatting with clients. Do you know those little thoughts that make them feel stuck or hesitant about decluttering?  With the help of Bridget Flynn from Divine Organizing, we’ll bust three of the most common myths that keep many of us from diving headfirst into home organization.

 

Myth #1: “But I might need it someday.” I hear this so often from my clients. This phrase can apply to just about anything, like that pair of fishnet stockings you wore once or a bag of broken rubber bands collecting dust. 

 

The general rule among organizers is that if you haven’t used something in the past year, you probably won’t use it again. 

 

Also, it’s so important to trust yourself! If you genuinely decide you need that item later on, guess what? You can always buy another one! For example, if you end up needing more rubber bands, you can pop into the supermarket and grab a new pack; these items aren't rare gems that you can’t replace.

 

Myth #2: “Decluttering means I have to get rid of everything.” Many people think that when they start decluttering, they’ll have to toss all their belongings out the door, but that’s not true. While some people embrace a minimalist lifestyle, that's not the point of decluttering. 

 

My approach focuses on keeping what you truly love and what you use. Everything else is tossed, recycled, or donated. The goal is to clear the clutter, not wipe your home clean.

Myth #3: “I must do it all at once.” I want to bust the myth that you must declutter your entire house in one go. Let me tell you, jumping into your whole home at once can feel completely overwhelming. Decluttering is a process; the best way to tackle it is through small, consistent steps. Start with an easy project, like your junk drawer. Another great starting point is your linen closet: simply pull out the items you haven’t touched in ages. 

 

Here’s a pro tip: keep a donation bin in your garage or front door. This way, whenever you find something you no longer need, you can easily drop it into the bin. Once it’s full, just take it to your local donation center.
