Learn how organizing your junk drawer can help give back a sense of control and functionality.
I have to admit, my junk drawer has become a bit of a black hole. I can barely close it without something threatening to spill out. With the help of Bridget Flynn from Divine Organizing, we’ll share some solid advice on organizing your infamous junk drawer.
Organizing your junk drawer is a great way to gain a sense of control, especially when things are out of order in your life. It’s also a quick win, turning something chaotic into something functional in no time. Here are four steps to efficiently organize your junk drawer:
Step 1: Dump it out. Empty your junk drawer onto a surface. I know it sounds daunting and stressful, but it’s the fastest way to deal with the mess. While the mess might look overwhelming, it’s also a chance to take back control.
Step 2: Sort it out. Once everything is out, it’s time to sort. Bridget recommends making three piles:
• Keep. Items you actually use.
• Relocate. Things that don’t belong in the junk drawer.
• Trash or Recycling. Toss anything broken, outdated, or unnecessary.
Step 3: Question your multiples. You’ll likely find duplicates of certain items, so ask yourself if you really need so many. For example, do you really need 75 pens? Probably not. Instead, keep just four or five Sharpies, ten pens, and a few pencils.
Organizing turns chaos into a functional space quickly.
Step 4: Get organized. After sorting, it’s time to organize. Use small drawer organizers from places like Amazon or Target. These bins are like a jigsaw puzzle that allows you to rearrange them until everything fits perfectly.
When putting items back, place the most frequently used ones at the front, like scissors and sticky notes, so they're easily accessible. The rest can go towards the back.
It’s amazing how something as simple as organizing a junk drawer can transform your space and your mindset. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, you’ll feel accomplished. So, if your junk drawer has been stressing you out, follow these four steps.
It’s not just about cleaning; it’s about creating order in a small area, leading to a greater sense of calm. If you need help with organizing, Bridget is ready to help.
