I hope you all had a fantastic holiday! It’s 2025, and we often start the year promising to start being organized, but then life gets in the way. Personally, I struggle with the pile of mail and paperwork that seems to multiply overnight. The bigger that pile gets, the less likely I want to attack it. Does this sound familiar?
If you’re struggling with organizing, I recently talked with Briget Flynn from Divine Organizing for some tips to keep our stuff organized throughout the year.
One of the solutions she recommends is using the Sunday Basket organizing routine as a simple way to keep your home organized. The idea is to dedicate one day a week, usually Sunday, to tidy up. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do it:
1. Gather. Grab a basket or a bin that will act as your collection tool and go around your house to gather all the clutter—paperwork, receipts, and little items like lip balms, stray socks, and stray toys.
2. Sort. Spend 15 to 20 minutes sorting everything into categories. You can start with these categories: bathroom, bedroom, front entry, closet, and junk drawer. This is where your clutter management skills come in handy.
3. Decide. Take a look at your stack of paperwork and ask yourself: Does it need action right now? Do I make a phone call or send an email? If it’s something that can be filed, put it in a file folder. If it’s no longer needed, toss or shred it.
With just 15-20 minutes a week, you can regain control over your clutter and enjoy a more organized home.
Bridget also recommends having a shredder tucked away in a corner to make it easy to dispose of sensitive documents without hassle.
As you organize, separate your important receipts, papers, and bills into file folders or envelopes. Label each one clearly and place it in an accessible area to make it easy to keep everything organized.
The whole process takes about 15 to 20 minutes of your day. The best tip I can give you is to put your Sunday Best organizing reset into your calendar. This will help you build the habit and keep your home organization on track for the whole year.
