Most people haven't looked at housing options in years. Here are the directions Fairfield County downsizers tend to go and how to figure out which one fits.
One of the first questions I get asked when someone starts thinking about downsizing is, "Where do people actually go?"
It's a great question. Most people I work with haven't looked at housing options in years, sometimes decades. So it's hard to even picture what downsizing actually looks like today. And what I always tell my clients is that there isn't just one answer.
There are a few different directions people tend to go, and it really depends on lifestyle.
Staying in town but simplifying. Some people want to stay right where they are, but just simplify. That usually looks like a smaller house, sometimes one-floor living, where everything is easier to manage. You're still in a house, and it still feels like a house, just with less to take care of.
A lifestyle shift. Others are ready for more of a lifestyle change, and that's where condos and townhouses come in. It could be a condo or a townhouse, something walkable. Maybe you can walk to the library, to restaurants, to shops. Or even just walking trails. That's a real lifestyle change, and for a lot of people, it actually makes things more fun.
And then there are elevator buildings, which usually mean apartment-style living where you don't have to worry about stairs at all. Sometimes those buildings even have amenities built in.
"Once you can picture yourself living somewhere that feels right, the whole idea of downsizing becomes less scary and more exciting"
Exploring new neighborhoods. Then there are the people who decide they want to change locations a bit. I see a lot of interest in areas like Rowayton, SoNo, and Black Rock. Those areas are more coastal, more compact, and more lifestyle-driven.
Beyond Fairfield County. And sometimes downsizing isn't just local. It can mean splitting time, maybe part of the year here and part of the year in Florida or Arizona. Or it might mean moving to be closer to your children and grandkids.
The key is that you don't have to have it all figured out right now. Most people don't. That's why part of my process is to actually show you what's out there across different towns and different styles of homes, so you can start to see what's available and picture where you might go. Because once you can picture yourself living somewhere that feels right, the whole idea of downsizing becomes less scary and more exciting.
If you've been wondering what your next chapter could look like, I'm always happy to walk you through the options. And if you're still in the early stages of figuring out where to even begin, that's okay, too.
