Most people think downsizing starts with packing. In reality, it starts with understanding your options and building a clear plan.
If downsizing has been on your mind, you’ve probably asked yourself one simple question:
"Where do I even start?"
The natural assumption is that downsizing begins with packing, decluttering, or getting your home ready to sell. But in reality, starting there can make the entire process feel overwhelming before you even get going.
There’s a better way to approach it.
The first step is getting a clear picture of your options. Before you pick up a single roll of packing tape, you need to answer a few basic questions:
● How much is your current house actually worth in today's market?
● Where could you possibly move?
● Should you buy a new place right away or rent for a while to test the waters?
● How do you time everything so it feels stress-free and manageable?
Part of my job is helping you see what’s actually out there. I often show my clients a range of options they might not find on their own. This could include smaller single-family homes, one-floor living, or condos in towns you haven't even considered yet. Until you see these possibilities in person, it’s hard to imagine where you might go.
"Downsizing doesn’t start with packing or decluttering. It starts with getting a clear picture of your options."
This is the part of the process I love most. We don’t need to rush, we’ll just look at options and create a plan.
Sometimes that plan leads to listing a home in a few weeks. More often, the move doesn't happen for six months, a year, or even two years down the road. We do whatever is best for your timeline. Having a clear direction is what makes the whole process feel lighter. It can even turn the move into something you look forward to.
